It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. And he played the tape for em, and they werent sure. I couldn't leave the people in my band just to do some wandering around the country, although it would have led to the Led Zeppelin gig, which was offered to me as well. We redid everything. I didnt! And the tickets have already been sold. I had an offer to join the Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page, when they did their last tour, but I'd just started Retaliation. We finished the record. The Retaliation are rated by many blues aficionados as one the three greatest British Blues bands, along with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall s Bluesbreakers. It was actually overkill for me, but it was interesting because it was so different. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. Actually Jonathan Cain tried to go down and go in and see him in San Francisco and they wouldnt let him in the building! And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. It starts way in the back, over a railing, and it rolls up to the front. All the backing tracks were done within six weeks in the fall of '85. I went along with it. If you were to play maybe 8th notes at that point, people could hear it and under- stand it.

Bio - AYNSLEY DUNBAR Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. Well, what Im about to sayIm gonna come across as a prima donna, but if theres any singers out there reading this at this point, theyll understand completely. He hugged me, I hugged him, and he said a few things in my earthat are mine, Im not gonna mention em. It wasn't anything special, but I thought it was neat it was a different sound-sort of a power thing. So I came home, and started seeing a series of doctors, getting opinions. I think he contributed so much to the sound of the band, obviously, to where those songs are gonna be embedded in everybodys heads and hearts forever. I have to price myself above that sort of stuff. And I was not gonna be part of that. And then you went on hiatus. In a new interview with ABC Audio, Perry reflected. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. You get in a baseball team and some people like each other and some people hate each other, but they still play together. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for.
